CARROLL COUNTY, Va. -- A Georgia pilot survived a crash Sunday as he was trying to land at the Twin County Airport, Hillsville authorities said.Dr. Jon. T. Stauffer, of Thomasville, Ga., told Virginia State Police that as he was attempting to land at about 1:50 p.m., turbulence and wind forced him to ditch the runway landing and instead land the plane in a field about 300 yards short. The crash landing caused significant damage to the plane, including collapsing the landing gear, police said.Stauffer was taken to the hospital to be checked, but police said he was treated and released.Police said Stauffer had just dropped his daughter off at college in Roanoke and was planning to land at Twin County to refuel and do a systems check.High wind is common at Twin County Airport, police said.
