Several items valued at $2,300, including a badge and rifle, were stolen from a Rockingham County deputy's vehicle on Thursday, deputies said.Deputies said the stolen items, which also included body armor and a camera, were inside Deputy Steve Perkin's vehicle and were taken while he was conducting interviews for cases he'd been assigned."This incident is unfortunate and the department-issued weapon and equipment locked away in the vehicle's trunk would ordinarily be a safeguard. However in this case, it was not, as entry of the vehicle was made. This property is not something to be played with. It's property of the Sheriff's Office that we need to have returned," said Capt. Perry Brookshire.Deputies said there was concern that the stolen items might be used by a criminal to impersonate a law enforcement officer."It should be noted that law enforcement also carries photo identification, and citizens should request such when suspicious of criminal law enforcement impersonations," a news release said.Anyone with more information about the case is asked to call Crimestoppers at 349-9683.
