Local meter reader wins $1 million lotto prize
A meter reader from Walnut Cove turned a trip to a convenience store to buy a drink into a $1 million lotto win.
Diana Patton said she stopped at the store and bought a Cash Splash Millionaire Raffle ticket, then bought two more later on a whim.
Patton said she couldn't believe it when she found out one of the tickets was a winner.
"We just stared at it," Patton said. "We have always done odd jobs, and worked, and just kept plugging away every day. And then we're staring at a ticket that could make things a lot easier."
Lottery officials said that Patton, knowing she'd already won big, bought another four $10 scratch-off tickets the next day. Two were winners, earning her another $110.
Patton said she plans to use some of the money on a trip to Hawaii or Key West.
The $1 million ticket was purchased at the Wilco station on N.C. Highway 89 in Walnut Cove.
