Sauratown Trails Association announced that it will join an annual statewide celebration for the NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST). They will host a hike and horseback riding event followed by a chicken stew dinner from 4-6:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 in Stokes County.

The Sauratown Trail connects Pilot Mountain State Park and Hanging Rock State Park in Stokes County north of Winston-Salem. The trails are approximately 35 miles long and open to hikers and horseback riders. Creation of the section is the result of a unique cooperative effort between the association and private landowners.

On Oct. 23, hikers can choose between two hikes, both ending at Mountain Trail Stable in Pinnacle for a chicken stew dinner. The longer hike follows a 6.3-mile trail starting at the association’s Rock House Road parking lot. The shorter hike is three miles and starts on Thore Road.

Horseback riders can choose from a variety of routes that all end at the Mountain Trail Stable. Maps are available at the Sauratown Trail Association’s website: http://www.sauratowntrails.org.

Governor Beverly Perdue has declared October as Mountains-to-Sea Trail Month. More than 20 events are being held in October that include hiking, biking, horseback riding and kayak paddling. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail is a linear state park that runs nearly 1,000 miles from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks. In Stokes County, the MST follows the Sauratown Trails.

The non-profit Sauratown Trails Association was formed in 1988. STA members are horse and nature lovers dedicated to creating and maintaining horseback and hiking trails in Stokes County. The Sauratown trails are open to riders and hikers. The Sauratown Trail section is closed during deer hunting season from mid-November to mid-December.
