WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A 2008 effort by a local woman to convince City Council to pass a law banning sagging pants fell flat, but a Winston-Salem couple is planning a march to kick off their effort to re-up the issue.Ken and Gwen Rasheed said they're fed up with youths, and even older men, who they see walking around the city with their pants sagging, sometimes to their knees. The couple said they think the boys don't know that the practice is ruining their futures. The Rasheeds said their ultimate goal is to once again convince the Winston-Salem City Council to consider implementing a ban.In 2008, Mattie Young organized a group called Citizens Against Sagging who went to the council with a petition containing 600 signatures, asking council members to pass an ordinance banning saggy pants. At the time, other cities across the country had passed similar ordinances, but council members here didn't take up Young's case. This time, the Rasheeds said they are planning a full frontal attack, and have signed up a lawyer to assist them in their endeavor. The couple said the response so far has been positive. They've already enlisted the help of several local businesses who have offered free products and services, such as haircuts, to men who agree to stop sagging. They've even handed out cash to men they see sagging if he agrees to pull up his pants. The march is planned for Oct. 9 at the Carl Russell Recreation Center on Carver Road. For more information about the march, call 336-788-6093.
