Man Tried To Kill Child At Hospital, Police Say

Wilkes County Man Charged With Attempted First-Degree Murder

A Wilkes County man has been arrested and charged with trying to kill a toddler at Brenner Children's Hospital.Twenty-six-year-old Jacob Andrew Minton, of Millers Creek, is charged with attempted first-degree murder in the attack of a 2-year-old girl inside the girl's hospital room at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday.Winston-Salem Police Capt. David Clayton said Minton is not related to the child but is in a relationship with the girl's mother.Clayton said the girl was being treated for injuries she had suffered at her home in Wilkes County the night before.He said investigators are trying to determine what injuries prompted the girl to be taken to the hospital initially. She was airlifted by a medical helicopter at about midnight Saturday from a location in Wilkes County.Police said hospital employees called police about the attack.Clayton said the child's mother was interviewed about the incident.Minton was being held in the Forsyth County Jail on $400,000 bail.Police said Minton's criminal record in Wilkes County includes larceny, littering and driving while impaired.The girl is listed in stable condition.Anyone with information is asked to call the Winston-Salem Police Department at 773-7700 or call Crime Stoppers at 336-727-2800.
