Sheriff Mike Marshall has only been in office since December but already has conducted a major drug bust. The wee hours of the morning of Friday, Jan. 28, found the Sheriff and many other law officers from the Stokes County Sheriff's Office and agents of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms gathered together in Danbury.

The pre-dawn briefing laid out the groundwork for the drug sting. Officers were assigned to teams and specific duties, then they hit the streets to find the suspects. This was the first wave of the drug enforcement pickup operation—Operation First Strike.

The list of those wanted for suspected drug dealing and/or using consisted of 24 names; 18 of them were arrested on Friday before 1 p.m. Two more of the 24 are already in the NC Department of Corrections, serving time on unrelated convictions.

“The completion of this pickup operation will continue until all suspects have been apprehended,” declared Chief Deputy Craig Carico of the Stokes County Sheriff’s Department.

Although the actual arrests were made on Friday morning, Operation First Strike had been ongoing for some time. It involved complex undercover drug investigations that had targeted those who distribute and use drugs illegally in the Stokes County area.

The dangerous work pinpointed these 24 suspects when “local and state law enforcement agencies made several undercover purchases of illegal narcotics and searched private residences,” said Carico.

It takes a collective effort for an operation of this magnitude to be successful. Besides the Stokes County Sheriff’s Office, the following agencies collaborated on Operation First Strike: Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, King Police Department, Winston-Salem Police Department, NC Highway Patrol, NC National Guard and NC Probation and Parole.
