STOKES COUNTY, N.C. -- The merry, merry month of May wasn’t so merry for dozens of Stokes County residents. More than 47 separate automobile break-ins and larcenies took place over a four-week period, leaving Stokes County law enforcement officials with their hands full.But not for long.On Thursday, June 2, a big break came after much investigation on the part of the Stokes County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives found large amounts of pertinent information and evidence that seemed to point the finger of blame to two young men: Nevin Casey Burton, 19, Highway 66 South, King, and Brandon Wayne Waddell, 17, Rosebud Road, Walnut Cove.Burton has been charged with 47 counts of felony Breaking/Entering of Motor Vehicle, 25 counts of misdemeanor Larceny and 25 counts of misdemeanor Possession of Stolen Goods. He was issued a secured $10,000 bond.Waddell faces charges of 45 counts of felony Breaking/Entering of Motor Vehicle, 24 counts of misdemeanor Larceny and 24 counts of misdemeanor Possession of Stolen Goods. He also was given a secured $10,000 bond.Both young men were scheduled to appear in District Court on Wednesday, June 15.The breaking and entering of automobiles and resulting larcenies primarily took place in the area of the southern portion of Highway 66, which falls within the county’s jurisdiction. The time frame for most of the crimes was May 1-June 3.There have also been reports of additional motor vehicle break-ins within the inner city locations of the city limits of King. The time frame for these crimes is the same as the one for the crimes charged to Burton and Waddell. The Sheriff’s Office is sharing information they have gathered with the King Police Department to aid them in their investigations.The break in the case came after Sheriff Mike Marshall, along with several deputies and detectives from the Stokes County Sheriff’s Office, spent much time collecting information. They interviewed citizens in the communities where these break-ins occurred. By using this information and piecing together events and reports, they were led to Burton and Waddell.The evidence gathered points to the possibility that more than 100 vehicles were actually broken into. Many of these automobiles belonged to people who did not choose to file a report.Further investigation is continuing.Stokes County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Craig Carico stated: “Sheriff Marshall wishes to thank all of our citizens who have shared information with our officers and investigators in this case, and he encourages everyone to report any suspicious activity, suspicious persons and suspicious vehicles any time these are observed.” This article appeared in Wednesday's edition of the Stokes News.
