KANNAPOLIS—More than 1,000 members of the Patriot Guard, Rolling Thunder and other military organizations escorted a fallen Vietnam Veteran Saturday morning to Kannapolis.
Sgt. First Class Donald Shue's remains were recently found after he was reported missing in action in 1969. The Concord native, who later moved to Kannapolis, was a member of the Army Special Forces. More than 40 years after his disappearance, Shue's family and the community can begin to have closure as they bid him a final farewell.
“To have one come home who has been missing is rewarding. Not only for us but especially for his family,” said Bill Barclay, U.S. Army Special Forces.

RALEIGH—Governor Bev Perdue signed a bill into law that creates separate criminal counts for causing the death of or seriously injuring a fetus inside the mother's womb.
Perdue's office said she signed Ethen's Law late Friday. The law is named for the unborn son of Raleigh woman, Jenna Neilsen, who was murdered in 2007. Perdue said she supports abortion rights, but also supports punishing anyone who would attack or kill a pregnant woman.
Ethen's Law does not apply to legal abortions, but does give legal status to fetuses that can not survive outside the womb. The law takes effect December 1. It creates a new count of murder, manslaughter, and assault and battery for unborn children.

Dean Says He's Unsure Why Windows Were Broken

POSTED: 1:41 pm EDT April 29, 2011
Three of the Duke University chapel's famous stained glass windows were broken during the last day of classes celebration when hundreds of students packed the lawn for several hours of games and entertainment. University officials said windows damaged Wednesday were 30 feet off the ground and may have been targeted by someone throwing rocks. The holes were five to 10 inches in diameter. The windows depict the magi on their way to Bethlehem, Jesus on a pinnacle and the Transfiguration. Chapel dean Sam Wells said it's not clear why the windows were broken. He says there is little security around the building.

Royal Couple to Honeymoon at Later Date

Prince William and Kate Middleton have decided to embark on their honeymoon at a later date and will spend the weekend at a private location in the U.K., royal officials say.

The new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge left Buckingham Palace in London late Saturday morning and boarded a helicopter, walking hand in hand to the helipad, where they stopped to greet staff members before departure.

A palace spokesman said they left for an undisclosed location in the United Kingdom for the weekend. William will then return to work as a search and rescue pilot next week. Their honeymoon destination remains a secret but will be overseas, the spokesman said.

Kate, 29, wore a blue dress with a black jacket, while William, 28, wore khaki slacks and a navy blue sports jacket as they left the palace.

William has booked two weeks off from the Royal Air Force, but palace officials have given no clue as to where the newlyweds will end up for a little private time after a lavish wedding watched by an estimated two billion people on Friday.

They can choose from a wide variety of destinations, including the queen's vast estates in Scotland, private islands in the Caribbean and African hideaways.

Some reports have indicated the couple may also tour Jordan because Kate and her family spent two years there when she was a child.

Royal sources have said the pair were expected to choose somewhere "hot and sunny."

Media speculation is focused on the following favourites: the Caribbean island of Mustique, Australia, Jordan and the Seychelles, an archipelago of more than 100 islands off Africa.

A homeowner in Sandy Ridge made a very unpleasant discovery on his property on Thursday night, Apr. 28. Gary Vincent Steele found a dead body near his home at 1233 Carter Road. He called Stokes County Emergency Communications shortly after 7:40 p.m., and the Stokes County Sheriff's Office sent out deputies to investigate.

The deputies talked with Steele who subsequently led them to the deceased body which was lying at the edge of the woods beside his home. When the deputies saw the corpse, they called for a crime scene search warrant. This document was prepared and approved. The next step was to call the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The SBI is presently helping the Stokes County Sheriff's Office with the investigation of this case.

That was the second time on Thursday that local deputies had visited the Steele property. Earlier that day, at about 2:37 p.m., they had been dispatched there to investigate a missing person's report. At this time, the deceased body found by Steele has not been officially identified by the medical examiner, therefore it cannot be confirmed that it was the missing person.

"We are awaiting autopsy findings and reports," stated Chief Deputy Craig Carico of the Stokes County Sheriff's Office on Friday night, Apr. 29. No official identification information has been released at this time. The investigation is currently in progress.

Surry County Sheriff Warns Of Scams

POSTED: 2:43 pm EDT April 29, 2011
With the return of warm weather, Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson is warning people to look out for scams typical to this time of year such as paving and barn-painting scams.Atkinson said there was a report of a paving scam on Tuesday, which is the first he has noticed this year. With this incident, a man and a boy stopped at a residence on Cook School Road and offered to repair the driveway. Atkinson said that according to the report, the man was elusive about the price of the repairs. After doing some work to patch up some spots on the driveway, the man charged the resident $2,800.He was described as being a white male around 45 years of age, 6 feet tall, weighing about 220 pounds, with graying hair. The boy with him looked about 12-years-old and had brown hair. The resident reported they were driving an old square-style bluish truck, possibly a Chevrolet. The sheriff said scams similar to this pop up every spring. The scammers often say they have “leftover asphalt” that they are using. Atkinson said they do not do foundation work when paving and they do not do a quality job. They then charge a high fee.Another typical scam is people offering to paint a barn, but after the first rain, it washes off because they just used something like colored kerosene.Atkinson advised, “Be suspicious if somebody walks up and volunteers to do unsolicited work.”The sheriff said people should make sure they have a firm verifiable agreement including the price and what work will be done. A legitimate company will have no problem signing a contract or providing references, Atkinson said. He said to be wary of any deal where it has to be done right now or never.Even though the operations are “terribly wrong,” Atkinson said, “It’s not a crime if they word it correctly and if the people say OK.”People can pursue a civil lawsuit, but the sheriff’s office cannot charge them. Atkinson said this is a gap in the state legal system. Though the officers sometimes find the people who are suspected of scams, Atkinson said, “a lot of times there’s not a crime to charge them with.”Another scam Atkinson said to be wary of is when a person drives up and says he or she is interested in purchasing nearby property or cutting down timber and asks the resident to walk outside to show them where the boundary of their property is. Meanwhile, someone else goes into the home and steals items. This article appeared in Friday's edition of the Mount Airy News.

22-year-old wore explosives, fired AK-47 at SWAT team

Blakely Hilton Jernigan fired a handgun directly at an officer’s chest from close range

By PoliceOne Staff
COLUMBIA, SC — It all started when a newspaper delivery man noticed he was being followed by the driver of a black Ford Explorer. That deliveryman called the police, who stopped the driver, 22-year-old Blakely Hilton Jernigan.
This is when things went sideways.
As Patrol Officer Alexander Broder approached Jernigan’s vehicle, according to The State, Jernigan fired a handgun directly at the officer’s chest from close range.
We can all breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Officer Broder was wearing his department-issued body armor. He survived, but Jernigan continued on to his apartment, initiating an hour-long SWAT standoff.
Jernigan’s father was called on to help negotiate. Hopes were high as it looked like the young man would be surrendering though a back door, but that’s when he plowed through the door and fired an AK-47 at two of the SWAT officers, according to The State.
Those officers fired back, killing Jernigan, whose body remained in the backyard while a bomb squad scoured the apartment. His body was strapped with homemade explosives.
Here’s what officers found in the apartment, according to the State:
“An undetermined amount of cocaine and marijuana, a second AK-47, machetes and other knives with long blades, and an explosive powder that had been used to construct the homemade explosive devices.”
The stove was also on, filling the place with gas, which could have been deadly if a flash grenade were used.

Cop dies saving daughter from falling tree

Threw himself on top of his 9-year-old daughter who was sleeping in the tent while storms raged outside

Daily Mail
JEFF BUSBY CAMPGROUND, Miss. — A police officer sacrificed his life to save his young daughter when a tornado ripped through their campsite in Mississippi, part of the terrifying band of storms devastating the South.
As violent winds tore through their tent, Louisiana police Lieutenant Wade Sharp, 40, flung himself on top of the sleeping nine-year-old to shield her.
Moments later a huge sweetgum tree crashed through the canvas, hitting the lieutenant on the back of the head and killing him instantly, but leaving his daughter unharmed.
It was the final act of heroism in a 19-year career with the force, in which he had been decorated several times for bravery, twice saving lives by endangering his own.
Covington Police Chief Richard Palmisano told the Times-Picayune: 'He was a hero all the way through his whole career, and was a hero to the end.

Royal Wedding security: Scotland Yard makes raids

Officers swooped on three squats across the capital just 24 hours before William and Kate marry at Westminster Abbey

Daily Mail
LONDON — Twenty people were arrested today as Scotland Yard launched dawn raids ahead of the Royal Wedding amid fears of violence tomorrow.
Officers swooped on three squats across the capital just 24 hours before William and Kate marry at Westminster Abbey.
The Metropolitan Police said the raids were carried out as part of an investigation into disturbances at the student protests last year and the recent trade union march.
However, sources told Sky News that officers had targeted people who were known troublemakers. Labour backbencher John McDonnell accused police of carrying out 'some form of pre-emptive strike'.
A force spokesman admitted the arrests had been brought forward because of the Royal Wedding at Westminster Abbey.
Mr McDonnell accused the Metropolitan Police of a 'disproportionate' reaction to the threat as he raised a point of order in the House of Commons.

Lt. Jeremy Garcia was seen pocketing car scratch repair items valued at $19.99

By Vic Vela
Albuquerque Journal
SANTA FE — A Santa Fe County Sheriff's lieutenant faces a shoplifting charge after he was allegedly caught trying to steal inexpensive car care products from Kmart on Tuesday morning.
A store security guard caught Jeremy Garcia, 39, opening a car waxing kit and pocketing some of its contents at the Kmart on St. Michael's Drive, according to Santa Fe police Capt. Aric Wheeler.
Garcia was seen pocketing items that dealt with car scratch repair. Wheeler said the product is valued at $19.99.
Garcia was not in uniform and there were no signs that he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the 8 a.m. incident, Wheeler said.
Garcia was cited for misdemeanor shoplifting of under $100 and was released, as is customary with petty shoplifting charges, Wheeler said.
Garcia heads a traffic patrol for the sheriff's office and has been a lieutenant for five years, according to Santa Fe County Sheriff Robert Garcia. Jeremy Garcia has been placed on paid administrative leave pending a sheriff's office internal review of his alleged actions, the sheriff said.
"It's very disappointing," Sheriff Garcia said. "Very shocking. I'm at a loss for words."
